jumpstART: an innovative public art project
Riverhead's Ratgrrl Royalty Project:

One simple, lovely message: “We are a Royal Family!”
Royalty is a concept that is not just for the priveleged few. Not just for those with more money, influence, special talents or lucky birth family. We are all Kings and Queens. We should treat each other as such. Fairy tales are stories that make us wish we were special enough to be royal. It's a lie.
We are all royalty.

This concept will be spread all over Riverhead with your help! It will start with a mural or panels on an outdoor surface. That mural conveys the message that we are all Royalty. That message will continue with royal imagery from traditional and non-traditional sources.(i.e. European to worldly royal images, crowns, septors, capes, chess pieces and playing cards) using simple street art style and techniques (layered stencils, paint, paper, and wheatpaste). The crowns will be at varying heights-an interactive mural that residents and visitors can take pictures with, (and post to social media or share #RatgrrlRoyaltyProject) so it looks like they are wearing the crown. There will also be indoor (storefront, window etc.) and smaller places where the theme will continue.

To honor part of the demographics of Riverhead, as well as my Latina roots, there wil be a phrase or phrases written in spanish as well.

There will be a good spot in town where you can find a throne (that can stay outdoors) for people to sit in, take pics and “Hold court.”

This whole concept is a treasure hunt for the public. As people explore Riverhead, they'll find sweet treasures (referencing this “Royal” theme) that others may not have noticed (people will be also discovering Riverhead's treasures). Maybe a septor in a store window, or in the bathroom of their favorite resturaunt there will be a crown on the mirror, so when they look at themselves the crown wil appear to them in the reflection. In the window of a currently unoccupied building they may see a removable decal that looks like an ornate mirror. When they gaze in, there will be another crown, or the phrase “All Hail!” to remind them they are a King or Queen (at kids' heights too). People will find these sweet messages, reminding them we are a royal family...all of us!
