The LGBTQ community and its supporters have invested so much into the fight for same-sex marriage that it seems as if this is the last barrier in the fight for full equality and recognition.. However, queer and trans people, especially people of color continue to face alarming breaches of human rights. Mass incarceration, homelessness, unemployment, and insufficient health care, are only a few of the inequities we face.
We need to address the silence. The LGBTQ/queer community is increasingly white, male, and middle class and focused on values that will not support or address the concerns of others who cannot fit this standard. The conversations around what our communities need, avoid and deny the gritty complex nature of what it means to be a person of color who is also queer and trans. They ignore the poverty, the murder, the systematic funneling of LGBTQ/queer people of color into a prison system that further abuses and marginalizes us, robbing our communities of stability, health, and the potential for sustaining and supporting one another.
We need to expand the conversation looking beyond same-sex marriage and listern to QTPOC voices be heard.
Marriage is Not Enough is an organization based in the Pacific Northwest that seeks to raise awareness of the issues facing queer and trans people of color.
