K9 Officer for Plymouth Police, WI

The Plymouth Police Department, is proud to announce it is launching a fundraising campaign for the addition of a K9 unit to our department. There has been an increase in drug related crimes and particularly disturbing, a steady increase in the use of heroin. The City of Plymouth Wisconsin is not immune from these problems, and our officers have seen firsthand the overdoses and deaths that heroin and other drugs cause in our community. We have realized the need for change, and the addition of a K9 unit would be a welcome tool to assist our officers in our effort to combat this growing trend.

The predominant tool for law enforcement in the detection of illegal drugs is a canine unit. The Plymouth Police Department is looking to fill a deficiency in western Sheboygan County by acquiring a K-9 unit to assist officers in our area. The K-9 unit would compliment the existing K-9’s and would be available to help combat illegal drug activity county-wide.  The dog would be certified in detecting marijuana, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines. Their keen sense of smell is unmatched by any human police officer.

Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco supports the Plymouth Police Department’s decision to obtain a K-9 unit.  He states, “The problem with heroin has exploded in the county, and 5-7 years ago it was hardly heard of.” There is a marked increase in the use of heroin in our county and he currently has six heroin death prosecution cases that are pending. The first occurred only four years ago.  In 2014, there were ninety-four drug search warrants executed with thirty-four being heroin search warrants.

A K-9 unit would be on day to day patrol with its handler and accessible for traffic stops, available for educational purposes to local schools and civic groups, and it would fill the requests of local schools for canine searches throughout the school year.  Canines can search a building in a fraction of the time it would take an officer.

The K-9 unit will be completely funded by donations from local businesses, community organizations, private citizens and grant/foundation monies.  Our goal is to raise $60,000 to implement a K-9 unit at the agency.  This will cover the cost of the dog, handler training, fully equipping a K-9 squad and the yearly cost for food and veterinary bills.  After the initial investment, the yearly cost for annual recertification, food and veterinary bills is expected to be approximately $1,750.  The typical service life of a drug-detection canine is approximately nine years.  Charitable contributions to the K-9 fund are tax-deductible under section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code.

This is a great opportunity to address a specific law-enforcement need in our community, making Plymouth and Sheboygan County a safer place to live.  Donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated.
