Nick's mobility vehicle (Van Solo)

Denise's sky dive = Nick's accessible vehicle

On Thursday 3 September, Denise Small will be doing a sky dive at Headcorn Aerodrome. Denise is amazing. Fact. She has decided to celebrate a significant birthday by jumping out of a plane and raising money for Nick Grange. She has known Nick's wife, Rebecca, for more than 20 years and has become friends with Nick thanks to many fun holidays and late nights at the dinner table.

In February last year, Nick Grange went out to buy some eggs and a bottle of wine from the corner shop and he hasn't come home since. Crossing the road, he was hit by a car and suffered life-changing injuries. After five months in a coma and nine months in hospital, Nick moved to a residential care home late last year where he is continuing his recovery. He is in a wheelchair and can only move one hand. He can't sit up unaided and the less said about his bowels the better. He also suffered a traumatic brain injury that has taken a chunk of his memories away and left him dazed and confused a lot of the time (even more than he used to be).

Nick is making progress, albeit slow, but the thing that's breaking his heart is that he is stuck where he is as he and his wife, Rebecca, don't have a wheelchair-accessible vehicle (the Department for Work and Pensions says that Nick isn't eligible for this funding, so cheers for that), so can't escape from the care home very often. Since hearing about Denise's plan to jump out of a plane, Nick has said that he wants to do the same. Rebecca is not so keen. But she would love to be able to take her husband on an adventure, which at the moment would be a trip to see his daughter who lives an hour away, so any sponsorship money raised will go towards a mobility vehicle - codename Van Solo - that will let them hit the road, if not the runway.

Thank you for reading, and three cheers for Denise x
