MakerSpace at Nauset

Our Summer Technology Institute has truly grown. This year over 50 students participated in the many activities offered. Using recycled items from the school- we built vertical gardens, Operation games using real circuits, and robot challenge courses. Using new technology we built: Underwater R.O.V.s, soldered electronic pins, 3d printed objects, and programmed games on water quality and the hazards of industrial agriculture. We also learned how to shop, cook, and eat locally and how to make our own silk screened products. Here is a link to our summer program review Video .

We received support from MidCape, True Value, Radio Shack, Orleans Pond Coalition, Orleans Masonic Lodge, and many farmers from local markets to complete all of the many summer program's activities. Community support  made the Summer Institute a true success, but now we would like to expand the summer program into a yearlong program by opening a Makerspace in the school library.

A Makerspace  is a space dedicated to teaching our youth to think for themselves, to think creatively, and to look for do-it-yourself solutions before running off to an adult to solve the problem. In short, a makerspace is a place where people come together to create with technology. It goes beyond engineering and STEM, this space is about creating creative people.  Our space will allow us to run afterschool programs in robotics, rovs, programming, arts, entrepreneurism, and expand our numerous community service clubs.

We are actively seeking grant funding, but community support will be what makes the program successful. When you come in for the open house we would love donations of arts/craft materials-so clean out your arts and craft closet-if you have some leftover supplies-we will find a way to use them. We are also taking donations of old Lego's or other compatible building sets to build a Robotics lab in the library.

We recently purchased a 3d printer and are saving for a laser cutter-donations will be used towards creating 3d prototyping lab.  This page is dedicated to raising funds to make the Nauset MakerSpace a reality ALL YEAR LONG!!!
