Mary Coney Treatment Fund

Mary Coney is a mom, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dedicated friend. I can't think of anyone who doesn't love her. We noticed for about 10 days that her behavior was a bit peculiar, and for about 7 days she had a headache she couldn't seem to kick. On Friday, July 31st, 2015, we took her to the ER and they discovered she had two masses on her brain. They admitted her to Neuro ICU in critical condition, where we watched her condition deteriorate rapidly.

On Tuesday, August 4th, 2015, she had brain surgery to attempt to remove the larger mass. The surgeon was able to remove part of it, and we began the wait for the pathology report to come back. Mom spent several more days in Neuro ICU, then moved to the Neuro Floor 8 days after being admitted. She stayed on the Neuro Floor for 3 days, and moved to a Rehab Facility where she continued Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy to retrain her brain to do simple everyday tasks that most of us take for granted.

When the pathology came back, it was definitely not what we were hoping for. Stage 4 Astrocytoma, a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer. It is critical to begin treatment incredibly quickly, and we feel fortunate to have found an Oncology Team who seem ready to move mountains to get her the treatment she needs.

Mom's outlook and attitude have been amazing throughout. She has not spent one minute cursing her condition, but instead looks at it as an opportunity, something she's been chosen to walk through. She chooses not to be a number or a statistic, but an inspiration instead. I have heard her say repeatedly, "If there is someone out there who is not only surviving, but truly living, let's find out what they're doing and do that!" The hope is that she will beat this and inspire others to not give up, but to live life fully. Her strength has caused me to re-examine myself and find a strength within that I didn't know existed.

She has chosen to do both traditional (radiation and chemotherapy) and non-traditional (holistic and homeopathic) treatments, including changing to a vegan, sugar-free diet. And since she is on a fixed income and unable to drive or do the work she was doing to supplement her tight income, we are asking for help in any amount to cover her out-of-pocket treatment costs and the costs incurred to modify her house to accommodate her condition. Our family is beyond grateful for the love and support of our extended family and friends, and thank everyone in advance for continued prayers and donations of any size. It will take a village to help Mom, and we have faith in our village. God Bless.
