Making The Most Of It

"Family is not an important thing, it's everything"
-Michael J. Fox

My grandfather, George J. Travis Sr. was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013.  His doctors found a mass approximately 9 cm in size . Because of where it it was located, close to the heart, doctors decided that operating in attempt to remove it was not a suitable option. Instead, my grandfather under went both radiation and chemo treatments. As our family remained hopeful, we had found out that the chemo was working and the mass had shrunk to about a third of it's original size. At this point both the doctors and my family remained optimistic. George had to take a short break from the chemo treatments, as they began to take a toll on his body. When the doctors felt that he was strong enough, he continued. He finally reached a point in which he only had 3 treatments left, which he finished  to the end.

Last week, George had a follow up with his doctor to get the results of his PET scan. This would allow doctors to see the status of the tumor to assess what steps needed to be taken next. The news he received this time were not what we had hoped for. Although the tumor had shrunk a significant amount previously, it had started to grow again. His doctor had also stated that the scan revealed another tumor as well. At this point, the chemo treatments have stopped working.

During this past year, we have seen my grandfather change in ways that have frustrated him. He can no longer walk on his own for very long. His muscles have weakened. His appetite at time is non existent. But throughout it all, his spirits and hope remained high...as did our family's. His wife of over 55 years, Eileen (my grandmother) has remained by his side through it all. Between taking him to doctor appointments, chemo treatments, runs to the pharmacy, helping him walk, cooking....you name it, she does it! They have shared a life full of love together. 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren later they are still together loving each other and their family despite all of the hardships life has brought them.

My reason for raising money is to allow my grandfather to "make the most of it".  He loves sports and we would love to be able to take him to see his favorite sports teams play (the NY Mets, Dallas Cowboys and the NY Knicks). It will also go towards helping my grandparents with mortgage payments and any medical expenses that they may incur.

My family and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to read George's story. Any donation, large or small, helps and will be appreciated more than words can  describe.
