study abroad to South Africa.

My name is Makeda Lewis and I am a 22 year old college student in my final year at Georgia State University. I am going on a study abroad trip to South Africa in May and I need your help getting there! This course will meet from May 9 through June 3, 2014. The course will begin with a three day class room experience at GSU during which the historical context of South Africa, and the Apartheid system will be examined. The class will spend 15 days in South Africa where we will visit the Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. Participants will learn how class stratification, gender policy and changing racial categories have impacted South Africa today. Through lectures and discussions with social, educational, and community representatives, participants will examine the impact of the anti-apartheid movement, on South African Society today. Additionally participants will compare and contrast the South African process with the aftermath of the US civil rights/black power movement. Participants will visit the Centre for human rights school of social work at UNISA and several community development projects. Participants will also visit and dialogue with members of the "Shack Dwellers" movement to learn about housing issues as well as "Sikhula Sonke", a woman led trade union. Additionally the class will visit an authentic traditional Zulu Village as well as go on Safari in a game preserve and Visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
