Two highly effective activist websites, MGx.com and CitizensAgainstLNG.com hosted on the same server by MGx were hit with a series of DDOS attacks. MGx advocates for social, environmental and economic justice and tax equity, especially on Oregon's southern coast. CitizensAgainstLNG, maintained by Jody McCaffree of North Bend, Oregon has delayed state and federal permitting for a proposed $7 billion LNG terminal on the North Spit of Coos Bay, Oregon for almost ten years.
MGx was started by me, Mary Geddry, but has many fine contributors and is read by state and local officials and as far away as Washington, DC. Both sites are well respected resources for climate warriors and for hydrofracking opponents and they each advocate strongly for renewable energy and sustainable local economies. We most have been doing something right to be hit with these attacks.
The repeated and sustained attacks eventually "burnt" the hard drive and seven years of hard work and gigabytes of research, support and legal evidence are at risk. We are now facing an expensive data recovery bill.
As volunteers, neither Jody nor myself are paid for our work and contribute our own money in addition to our time to provide these resources and advocate for cleaner planet. The small amount of advertising revenue generated by MGx doesn't cover the monthly maintenance fees on the site and the DDOS attacks were both costly and crippling.
The hard drive is being worked on in a "clean room" facility and the estimates for full data recovery are as high as $4,500. We have already started rebuilding on a new dedicated server and our covering those costs ourselves but the data recovery costs are beyond our reach. Any help would be so much appreciated.
We can't offer much but we will keep doing what we do which must have been pretty effective for the pro fossil fuel crowd to go to these lengths.
