London Liberty Gardens

London Liberty Gardens GO FUND ME campaign

Imagine a generation of urban gardeners, each growing an adequate supply of food for up to 20 people, bartering and trading with neighbours, crop cycling and efficiently farming in an urban center. Imagine that half of these gardeners were living off food stamps and food banks 5 years earlier. London Liberty Gardens’ goal is to be a hub of learning that teaches people to grow their own food in sustainable and practical ways and bring the above vision to reality.

London Liberty Gardens will be a space for collaborative interdisciplinary experimentation. We will bring together gardening professionals, landscapers, nutritionists, health and safety professionals, college and university students, and other holistic based practices to prototype and problem solve new ways to grow and deliver food in our cities.

Skills will be focused on holistic gardening, nutrition, and food preparation. The garden and kitchen site, in the SoHo neighbourhood of London, is already a busy community hub that supports many of the other needs of this low-income area. Beth Emmanual Church welcomed London Liberty Gardens to their grounds in mid-2014 when they had to vacate their previous premises, and has been an enthusiastic supporter since then.

London Liberty Gardens targets at-risk youth, those living in poverty, the mentally ill or disabled, the immigrant and ESL population, children, and the general novice public. They engage, influence, teach, heal, dignify, and liberate! The founder of London Liberty Gardens, Natasha Hockley, was born into intergenerational poverty herself. She is not only passionate about empowering people in similar situations, but understands how to engage them and best meet their needs. As she states: “Working with our hands instead of cupping them to receive handouts is much more rewarding and dignifying. Gardening and growing one’s own food can be used as a form of healing and therapy – grounding and highlighting inner capabilities.”

London Liberty Gardens has relied entirely on the community and volunteers for support to date. Tools, soil, materials, plants, machinery and hundreds of hours have been donated. Funding is sought to build fencing to protect crops from animals, cover the cost of materials and facilitation for workshops, provide printing and marketing, purchase seeds and seedlings, install rain barrels, and other potential needs. If you are in the London area you are welcome to come out and donate your time or just see what London Liberty Gardens has achieved in the last year.
