An Old Cabin for a New Tomorrow

Hidden Wonder
In 2008 I purchased a fixer upper in Columbia, Tenn.  Over time I explored the additions and disasters from the past.  Through this process I found the original structure to be a cabin or log house.  It would be later that I realized the potential significance of this log house.

Disaster Averted
In October of 2009, a building on the property next to mine was due to be demolished.  For reasons I still do not understand,  the contractor started on mine despite having a picture.  Fortunately, Maury County Historian, Mr. Bob Duncan, happened to be driving by.  He gave them a history lesson and saved the day.  Exerts of the lesson are in the news story below by Mr. Greg Menza of the Daily Herald.  The mose significant part of the lesson is, given its location and design, it could be one of the oldest structures in Columbia.

All this happened while I was at work. I praise God for putting the right people in the right places at the right time. The damage to the log structure was relatively minor. They removed the fireplace, the concrete porch, and the addition on the back. In all, they removed what I had to remove later. However, I was not in a financial position to capitalized on the mixed blessing.

The Grand Plan
The raising of children and the struggles of a business have taken their toll.  I now have to do something with this structure or the city will take a picture and send the hired dozers.  I don't have the resources to complete the project on my own.  Therefore, I have to humble myself and ask for help.

There are foundations that help with the cost of renovating historic structures but they are available to non-profits.  The structure has to serve some purpose other than to be a home for some guy.  I will sign the property over to the non-profit for a fair market value not to exceed $5,000.

Step One - create a non-profit.
I have created The Log Cabin Group.
Step Two - Ask people for support.
                        1) I have created a GoFundMe account.
                        2) I have talked to people of varying                                backgrounds to serve on the board.
Step Three - Hire architects and craftsment to restore a piece of history.
                        ...a work in progress.

Hold on.  It doesn't stop there.  It has been a challenge of mine to create a semi-selfcontained philantropic entity that can generate revenue from a business to support its charitable projects.  The Log Cabin Group's mission will extend beyond the restoration of a building.   It will promote the individual growth of the people of Columbia and the surrounding Middle Tennesse Area through Education, Business, Faith and Transportation.  This is the biggest and most exposed project I have ever undertaken.  While The Log Cabin Group is a legal entity in the State of Tennessee, I have yet to get the 501c3 classification.  Your donations and prayers are welcomed but neither will be tax deductable. I will provide updates at least once a month.
