Long Lake Fire Department Centennial Celebration 2015

Long Lake was settled in 1855 and incorporated as a village in 1906.  Residents relied on horse troughs and buckets for early fire control.  The Long Lake Fire Department was organized on October 21st, 1915.  Out of necessity, every able bodied man in the community of 200 was considered a department member.  Early fire equipment included buckets, wood ladders, a two wheel chemical cart, and a horse cart.  The first fully equipped fire truck was a 1921 Ford Model T.  Fire trucks and firefighting ability continued to improve as fire engines were added or replaced in 1936, 1946, 1956, 1973, and onto the more specialized trucks and equipment of today.  The newly formed fire department operated out of local storage spaces and rented garages until 1942 when the first fire station was built on Mill Street.  It was at the Mill Street Station in the late 1950’s where advanced first aid was introduced and members soon were responding to medical emergencies as well.  Department housing improved in 1968 when the 2 ½ bay Park Avenue Station was built and again in 1978 when an addition doubled the area.  The Department moved to its current location site on Willow Drive in 2003.  Changing times and a new coverage area drove the need to build and staff Station #2 on Shoreline Drive in Navarre.  The first “full time” Fire Chief was hired in 2008 to manage the department which included a roster of 50 Firefighters, 3 Fire Engines, 2 Tankers, 3 Rescue trucks and support vehicles.  From the founding members who came before us to those on the current roster we are proud to serve and protect our community.

We now embark on preparing for the Centennial Celebration, and we need your help.  We have big plans for the Centennial Celebration that will take place on September 19, 2015.  Below are some details about the event:
