I am raising money to implement a 6 month program in the Boston community for parents with autistic children. The program is designed to help parents reduce some of the stress associated with rasing a child with autism. Fifteen years ago the incidence of autism was 1 in 5,000. According to the latest statistics 1999 - 2000, 808 or 0.50% of children ages 3-21 who received special education services in Massachusetts have autism. In 2008-2009, 9,829 or 5.83% of children with disabilities ages 3-21 who received special education services have autism. If you add up the numbers for parents it would equal out to 21,270 parents in Massachusetts that are experiencing unique stress directly related to parenting a child with autism.
The money collected will go towards offering FREE seminars. The seminars are for parents and family members affected by autism. The parents will be introduced to the scientific findings on humor and autism, and offered simple but effective strategies to incorporate these findings into their daily lives. When humor and laughter are used proprerly and consistently it can help the parents to laugh at things that happen in their daily lives that aren't really funny. Because there is no cure for autism, only treatment L.A.U.G.H.S. is an excellent self management tool for everyone, the parents, framily members, friends and the autistic child.
Supporters can also help by telling their friends, family members, and co-workers who has an autistic child about Laughing At and Understanding Good Humor Seminars (L.A.U.G.H.S.) Institute, Inc.
