One idea can change the world. One person can make a difference. That’s what the KY STAR Center is about- it stands for Kentucky Science, Technology, and Robotics Center (officially the Kentucky S.T.A.R. Center). It is a facility for students ages 11-19 to build, experiment, and learn about science and engineering, founded and is operated by school-age students who have a goal of to creating a community of curious minds, a foundation for a better future. Our organization serves a purpose which is two-fold: a) to foster the creative scientific ideas of student researchers who will one day become leading scientists in their chosen fields, and b) encourage scientific exploration by students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience science hands-on.
Our vision statement is officially ‘ To develop a science makerspace to provide enriching experiences in science and technology for middle school and high-school aged students’, but it has really evolved to become so much more than that. We’re targeting the student population of the Lexington/Frankfort/Georgetown tri-county area, including middle school and high school students from all backgrounds and walks of life. Since our initiation in early 2016, the STAR Center has made leaps and bounds in terms of progress, with nearly 15 student volunteers as of June of 2017, but we still have the best ahead. By the end of 2017, we hope to have purchased lab-equipment for our mobile makerspace, and have a student impact closer to 100 via camps and classes. The organization’s mission statement is Discover Science, because our hope is that in fostering these innovations in education and science, and in providing a safe place for kids to learn and have fun, we can show students what science really is, and what it can really do to change the world.
