My name is Jamie Doxey. I’m currently serving as a Royal Marines Commando and I would like to start by offering you the chance to learn to dive!
I’m a BSAC fully qualified dive instructor but, 18 months ago, on arguably one of the British Military's most difficult in-water courses (Expedition Sub Aqua Diving Supervisors course), I suffered a severe Decompression Injury, (a spinal and neural bend) whilst 12 miles offshore.
After being evacuated to shore, involving both the Falmouth Coastguard and Plymouth Lifeboat services, I was transferred by ambulance, whilst slipping in and out of consciousness, to the DDRC Recompression Chamber. After a total of over 13 hours in two stints in the chamber I was discharged to await further testing.
My dive computer showed no evidence of any abnormalities on the dive, and my dive buddy was also completely fine, so I was puzzled as to why after so many years diving I had almost died.
3 weeks later at the Bristol Heart Institute I received the answer to my worries, when further testing revealed I have a PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale) which is a hole in my heart.
I was completely gobsmacked: I believed I was in peak physical condition, this news entirely knocked the wind out of my sails. I couldn’t comprehend after everything I’ve put my body through in my life, I could be suffering from this condition, but here I was faced with that reality.
It was a long process, applying for funding. Whilst I couldn’t pursue my greatest passion, I had to find another focus in the meantime. I wanted this to involve the sea, and a little over a year later I’m now a fully qualified surf instructor and beach lifeguard.
As I previously mentioned I’m also fully qualified dive instructor so your donations will not go without reward.
