Humanity Hospital USA Chapter

This is a fundraising website for North American Chapter of Humanity Hospital.

This summer in August, 2014, I visited Humanity Hospital, India as a part of my community service project. During my interview with Dr. Ajay Mistry (founder of Humanity Hospital), I heard his message loud and clear: operational expense is the biggest challenge for the hospital. Due to inadequate operational funds, the hospital is unable to offer free medical services to many helpless poor and needy who cannot afford to pay for medical treatment.

North American Chapter of Humanity Hospital appeals to the North American Community to donate towards meeting operational expense of Humanity Hospital.

Many of us in the U.S. take for granted a healthcare system that is accessible to the all members of the community – rich or poor. The wealth in our system is also evident from the medical excesses and wastes that often go toward unnecessary tests, hospitalizations and medications for those who do not need them.

Such a high position is unimaginable in many parts of the world. One such place I've visited several times now is Kolkata, India. On several of my visits, I have watched in awe troves of sick patients unattended in their basic health care services. I got tired of seeing poverty resulting in malnutrition, overcrowded living conditions, inadequate sanitation, and contaminated water. Routine vaccination was often unavailable for both children and adults, and basic clinical care for the acutely ill was in short supply. Poverty was the root cause. Poverty created a fertile environment for infectious and parasitic diseases. Poverty lead to illiteracy and inadequate education that correlated directly to poor health.

It is in this hopelessness, a poor but brave and strong woman – Subhasini Mistry, who lost her husband due to lack of basic medical treatment, rose. Although she made a living as a vegetable vendor, she dared a dream to make a hospital for her community who could not afford to pay for it. Her son, Dr. Ajay Mistry, went to medical school and returned back to his village to serve those same people who had no doctors years ago. Together they founded what was at first, a small shack and called it their first local hospital. And now, they are Humanity Hospital, Hanspukur, India.

I became inspired by the incredible compassion and courage of Subhasini Mistry and Dr. Ajoy Mistry to donate my time and raise funds for  Humanity Hospital.
