Bennett's Rebound from hit & run
On June 12th around 12:15am my husband was in a severe HIT AND RUN accident. He was driving South on Starkey Blvd when a white/silver diesel truck blew through a stop sign at Allico Pass, and my husband was forced to T-bone them with our 1999 Honda Civic. The driver of the truck then decided to leave the scene of the wreck, without knowing if the people inside of our vehicle were dead or alive. In desperation, while fleeing the scene of the wreck (and now CRIME), the driver knocked over multiple construction barrels AND ran another motorist off the road. People who lived close by ran out to help my husband and witnessed the truck erratically driving away. Thank the lord for those amazing individuals!!! This person obviously has no regard for human life, and is very dangerous. Shortly after all this happened, I received the one of the most horrific phone calls that a wife and mother could ever get. My husband’s number was calling me, but it wasn’t my husband’s voice on the other line…. I could hear him screaming and crying in the background, sirens, cars passing by, and other people saying, “we need to take your shirt off and use it to stop the bleeding… your losing too much blood…the ambulance will be here soon…can you feel this....we need to move him out of the road….is there anyone you want me to call?” At this very moment I knew that something was horribly wrong, and all I cared about was whether my husband, and my son’s father, was going to come home to us. My husband (Zach) is a computer technician and was hired to work on IP cameras and an internal networking system in Tampa at South Tampa Pet Resort. They requested that he not work during normal business hours, due to the population of dogs being housed there- it would interfere with their daily routines and such. So he worked during the evening time/early morning hours. Since our 2 year old son has several health issues (Because he was diagnosed with Down Syndrome at birth), there are many specialist appointments that we have to keep and attend during the day- and working at night makes this possible. We have car insurance through Direct General, and our insurance would have covered the OTHER person’s property damage & medical bills in a wreck. Since it was a hit and run and we didn’t have “uninsured motorist” on our policy NOTHING will be covered by our insurance except for up to $10,000 in medical bills for Zach (my hubby). Since Zach was taken away in an ambulance, the ride in that alone is half of the allotted amount covered. We have always been a “paycheck to paycheck” kind of family since only one of us can work. When having a toddler with special needs and health challenges, we cannot afford the kind of daycare or nanny that he would require. So for now, I have had to stay at home with him. We also have a typical 1 year old son, who also stays at home with me since money is always very tight. We try to save money when we can. Since this horrible turn of events I’ve calculated our finances & expenses, posted details of the hit & run in many public forums, contacted our insurance company, contacted attorney’s for legal advice, contacted the lead officer from Florida Highway Patrol about our case (and we STILL haven’t received any kind of call back), and contacted the towing company. Everything is so overwhelming, depressing, frustrating, and confusing. Just FIVE DAYS after the wreck and we owe the towing company $380.00 even though our car in completely totaled (and it accumulates $20.00 more every day it sits there). The owner also told us that even if we don’t want the vehicle, that we still have to pay him or we cannot get our tag back (and a lien will be placed on it). Then, in order to get the totaled vehicle home it would cost $45. First of all, Zach has no medical insurance. So, for his medical bills… After the wreck he was transported by ambulance to Trinity Hospital nearby. While in the emergency room he received xrays of both of his hands and wrists, 8 stitches to stop the huge laceration on his wrist directly on top of a artery. He received numerous numbing shots and pain medication in order to repair his dislocated thumb (in 3 different places) and to stitch him up. After the $10,000 being covered- as of right now, without any kind of follow up appointments or physical therapy for his hand, we already owe the hospital $1,476 after his immediate visit following the hit and run accident. We believe that we can find another form of transportation for under $2,000 and within walking distance of our house. And since the majority of Zach’s customers and employers are in Tampa, and we live in New Port Richey (which is 45 minutes to an hour away) not having transportation makes it impossible for him to work. Not to mention the ability to attend the necessary medical appointments for our son. I then calculated that if we have a month to get things together, sell everything that we can that has value, and get our transportation back… that things will progressively get better. For our electric ($250), water ($33), and rent ($975) we would have to pay by July 1st, 2018. To keep a roof over our head with utilities on it would cost us $1,258. This is why we have the goal of $5,000. Just for the expenses we need to pay immediately we need $3,134. With that, I can focus on nabbing this jerk who has no regard for human life. He was willing to leave another human being behind to die after a wreck that HE CAUSED!!!! WHO DOES THAT?!?? Like I’ve said to many other people… who is to say that the next time he does this, and he will, that he doesn’t kill the person he hits? What is there are children in the car next time? This person is a true sociopath to be able to sleep at night while another family is losing everything. Due to this person’s decision to get drunk/high and drive, hit someone, and then leave… good people are physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially suffering. Please help this little family during this their time of need. So that they can find faith in humanity again while fighting for justice. GOD BLESS YOU ALL, AND PLEASE HOLD YOU LOVED ONES A LITTLE CLOSER TODAY… Tell them you love them. Don’t let them leave your home without telling them you care! You never know what sick person is out there driving at the same time your loved one is. Cherish those people who mean the most to you.
