Worked my way through the bad flare up with the help of three new physical therapists who are trained in the McKenzie technique. They looked through my records, told me to forget everything that all the other therapists, doctors had said and to ONLY do the 6 exercises they taught me and in a specific order, depending on specific symptoms and body feedback. They also said they were sorry that I had basically been tortured up until this point and that the other people didn't seem to understand my injury in their prescriptions. They said that I present with a classically mechanical injury, in that my disc is bulging and sitting on the sciatic nerve... yeah.. I was trying to explain that! It feels good to finally be working with someone who believes that I am not just stuck in chronic pain but that I have a actual, physical problem.
I have re-applied to get more physical therapy as my charity waiver ran out after 2 weeks of working with the new therapists. Please pray that Providence will foot the bill for some more work with these folks. I have been able to move around more than the past 6 months but I still have some excruciating pains. I do, however, have some physical movements that are tools to push the disc back in place. The pains are coming from the disc protruding so when I have those pains I stop and work through the movements!
I love you all. You are amazing and have been so supportive on my journey to walking again. I continue on this journey and as I learn to walk again I think of and thank all of you for your kindness, prayers, wishes and support.
Had two good weeks where I was able to stand up straight, get to the pool for therapy and do some walking. For the past two weeks, however, I have been dealing with a bad flare up. It's very frustrating and though I have been very heavily focused on natural remedies flare ups like these make me wonder about the long term outlook for this injury and if I need to try more pharmaceuticals or other intervention. Still working everyday on stretching and building core strength. Still working on getting some other referrals and opinions on my images. Love you all and thanks for the continued prayers. <3
Physical therapy may be painful but it is working. I am standing up straighter everyday. Pool therapy is amazing - I have been researching a lot about pain and neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses which are due to changes in behavior, environment and neural processes, as well as changes resulting from bodily injury. Basically, long after tissue damage injuries heal the brain can still perceive pain. Both tissue damage pain and perceived/residual pain show up the SAME on functional MRI's. It is really a fascinating field. Mindful meditation is one of the things that can help us help our brains to stop feeling so much pain. All of the love and support from my friends and family help too. You are a blessed bunch, I love you all dearly and I thank you a million times for helping me during one of my darkest times. Life is amazing. Thank you <3
Still a bit off kilter and slumped over BUT massive improvement and I am standing straighter up. I have started some decompression - intermittent traction treatments with the physical therapist and the chiropractor. The tortoise wins the race so I stay focused on patience.
Generous donations! I bought a walker from craigslist for $40.00! Derek is fixing the wheels and I will be able to get around a little better! (the other one I had was rudimentary and borrowed!)
Finally reduced my inflammation enough to get an adjustment from a chiropractor. His instructions were to be very careful because my condition is like "walking on eggshells." He said that I am in "bad condition" and I need to clear my schedule for a while.
Thanks for checking in with me- I have had so many e-mails, calls and text messages, they are keeping my spirits up! I appreciate all of you sooo much! <3
Physical therapist - unfortunately may not be where I will find my healing. Though she is very sweet she let me know that her office does not have the equipment that she needs to really treat my injury. I need something called "Decompression." I have started to interview Chiropractors who do decompression and have found some nice people. The treatment plans for this injury will be between $2000-$5000 depending on what they find so I continue my fund raising and search for opportunities to work from home (now that I am out of constant pain and can possible do some work from a computer). Please let me know if you are aware of any opportunities! I am a great customer service rep and I have a computer and internet! Thank you, Lindsay
Had my first physical therapy visit. She said it would be a long road but she thinks she can help me. I not have a walker, since she said I looked pretty pathetic trying to get around with the cane. It certainly makes moving a lot easier and there is less of a chance of falling with the walker! Next goal is to get up the strength to get into a pool! Thank you ALL for your encouragement, words, prayers and dollars. I could not get through this without you. <3
Finally found a primary care provider who is willing to work with me to get access to appropriate care. She did tell me that because I have no insurance that IF I get an appointment with the OHSU spine center it probably won't be until 2014... so I am looking for other options. Thank you so much for your financial and emotional support.
This week brought a nasty flare-up, lots more medication, me feel pretty weird and out of it on the meds and just trying to cope with the increased pain. I am waiting to hear on a referral to the Neurosurgeon. I am also trying to gain access to epidural injections since OHSU hospital said they will not cover them and they are $1500-$5000 a PIECE! Love you all and thanks for your well wishes and support <3 Lindsay
I made it to acupuncture where it was evident that I will need more treatments to work through what is going on. I got a decent flare up after trying to walk around a little so I am taking it easy for a few more days before trying to walk around again. Thank you for all of your prayers. You are amazing.
Second opinion on MRI imaging shows severe degeneration of the L5-S1 disc. Very flat and beyond bounds and visible irritation of the Sciatic nerve where it goes through that disc. Working on a referral to a surgeon, which has now been recommended. A lot more healing to do and a bit shocked but trying to stay positive and speak to my body. Let's heal!
Chag Semeach, Happy Hanukkah. The festival of lights brings to me the miracle of slow and patient recovery. MRI results show issues but no need for surgery. The next many months include physical therapy, chiropractic work, acupuncture and a continuation of holistic eating and herbal supplements. Thank you for your kindest support as I continue to heal and fight for my health and mobility.
MRI of thorasic and lumbar spine have been completed! Over an hour in a fancy magnetic, radio frequency machine that temporarily rearranged my hydrogen atoms and made pretty pictures out of me. The images will be available within 48 hours and hopefully some answers will be found. Next up: thousands of dollars of physical therapy has been ordered.
Tomorrow is the MRI of my lumbar and thorasic spine. Thankfully, they will let me have it without paying the full amount. Please continue to spread the word of my need as I work towards mobility and healing.
Again, I cannot put into words how thankful I am. The generous donations will allow me access to healing and medical care that had begun to feel inaccessible and impossible. The prednisolone I am taking, coupled with a completely anti-inflammation diet and extremely potent anti-inflammatory herbs and topical treatments has allowed me some relief in the past 72 hours. Bless your hearts and souls and may your generosity come back to you 1 million fold.
5.3 % to goal on day 1. Every time a donation came in today, I cried. I cried as I filled with the sheer thankfulness and outpouring of love. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, written words of encouragement and prayed for my healing. You are so truly kind. I cannot thank you enough.
OK! Everything should be in order and donations should be able to go through now. Not sure what the problem was but some interface with paypal and I a now using wepay. Thank you kind souls. Your karma will pay you back a million fold for every dollar, word or prayer you send. If you cannot afford to donate, I get it. Please share this page and pray for my healing. I feel it. Thank you.
GO FUND ME account is being worked on. All donations are being bounced back right now. I am working with the company to get it cleared up. I am so sorry and thank you everyone for bringing it to my attention! I will post an update as soon as it is cleared up!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart everyone.
My name is Lindsay. I am 33 and I just graduated from law school. I want to help people gain access to justice. Unfortunately, I hurt my back very badly before I could get a job or insurance. Now I am completely disabled, unable to walk or sit and trying to get medical treatment with no money.
I have a hard time asking for help. The thought of asking friends and strangers for money for myself is foreign. Though I have raised money for many, many charities over my life time, most recently to send my sweet nieces to summer camp, I have never been one to accept handouts. I am, however, in a really hard spot right now.
A few wonderful friends have asked me to start a gofundme account so that they can help me raise money to get an MRI and for other treatment modalities. I resisted at first but after 6 months of being in pain and 3 months of being barely able to get to the bathroom or stand at all, I realize that I really need help. When I am well, I hope to continue to give back to my community. Thank you for considering how your contribution can help me get back on my feet, literally.
