Numerous studies, including one from the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, show that children who participate in organized team sports have better physical, psychological, and social well being than their counterparts that do not participate. In addition, the learned behavior adopted by the student-athlete (discipline, patience, personal accountability, learning to deal with failures, etc.) have a direct influence on future adult behavior.
Subsequently, studies also show that Third grade is the most crucial time in the academic and social development in children because it is at this point that reading transitions to actual learning and practical application; from "learning to read to reading to learn”. With 83 percent of low-income students testing below proficient in reading at the start of fourth grade, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s analysis of 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data, there is proof that students in low-income environments could directly benefit from the positive impacts of organized sports.
THE PROBLEM
Many prospective student athletes in low-income areas do not have the additional resources needed to participate in organized youth sports, thus negating any positive benefits to be received from said participation.
THE MISSION
H1GHER LEARNING's goal is the provide sport-specific footwear for inner-city elementary student athletes allowing them to experience the physical, psychological, social, and academic benefits attributed to participating in organized team sports.
THE NEED
I am looking to raise $2500 to create the H1GHER LEARNING non-profit organization that will carry out the MISSION of providing sport-specific footwear for student athletes in low-income areas. Money from this fundraising campaign will do towards the following:
· State and Federal 501c3 filing fees.
· Trading marking the H1GHER LEARNING name and logo.
