ok, so We are trying to figure out how to get Lisa's other grand daughters over here to be able to go with us on the trip. It would make the family unit complete. SO far the only thing we can come up with is for them to fly out here from Seattle. It is much too far to drive. Called Alaska Airlines to see if they could give us discounted tickets or something, but they say that they cannot. At this point it will be an additional $900 to fly them out here. The girls will be travelling as Unaccompanied minors, since they are 8 and 11 or 12(I know, bad aunt for not knowing for sure...LOL) Anyways, The lady at Alaska Airlines suggested we try to find someone, anyone who has airline miles they can or would be willing to donate. She said 10,000 miles would take $100 off the tickets, and another 10,000 would take another $100 off. Anyone?!?!
ok, so here's the deal...So right now, we have a total of $1798 for our trip. I'm going to ask that we keep the donations coming in spite of our Awesome news today!!! Don't want to seem greedy, but what we have now is perfect for the flight, and we would like to be able to take Lisa to a show or something while in Vegas, since this is Her first time there as well, and a new development in the trip plans!!! We are looking at going Thanksgiving Week.
So here is the update you have all been waiting for! So as you all know, I was on the news last night, and got an interview about this fundraiser I am doing! (Thanks Claire Anderson). Well, the response was amazing and nothing short of awesome!!! The donations started rolling in, and the support was overwhelming!!! It was all that we had hoped it would be. So fast forward to this morning...I opened my email about 11am, to find a very peculiar message from a man named Terry. I realized right away that it came through my gofundme page. I opened it up and read what it had to say. And read it again then started to shake and I couldn't breathe!!! This couldn't be happening. Is this a joke? So I call my husband...read him the email which said...
New Message from Terry Kirkum
Sent from: Get Lisa to the Grand Canyon
One of me y team members forwarded an article about your mom, and her battle with cancer. I am the General Manager of Grand Canyon West. Grand Canyon West is a 9,000 acre resort, located on the west rim of the Grand Canyon, and is encompassed and owned by the Hualapai Nation, and is the home of the Skywalk.
On behalf of my team, we sould like to extend an invitation to visit this section of the Grand Canyon and the world famous Skywalk. We will be happy to provide your family with complimentary tickets, meals, and lodging at our Hualapai Ranch.
Please contact me directly if this will work for you...
And then, he left his number!!! I was (and still am) blown away...Shaking, I ask my husband, should I call him? He said YES!!! So I said, ok, and called him. Terry picked up the phone and proceeded to tell me that no it isn't a joke, and then confirmed everything. Asked about our situation a bit, and extended his invitation!!! Basically told me they would like to make sure we have the trip of a lifetime! Has your jaw hit the floor yet? I know I have been having a hard time picking mine back up!!! So basically we will now fly into Vegas, where we will most likely have rooms comped for us at a hotel(one of the "stations") for one or 2 nights, then the staff at the resort will bring cans to pick us up in Vegas and bring u to the resort were we will have full access to the grounds and all it has to offer. Which includes the skywalk, and maybe even helicopter rides!!!
So, we earned $131 yesterday from Faster basset Coffee and Crepe Haus when they did their Helping Hounds Fundraiser for us!!!
Lisa got to go home today for a day pass. We all had a late lunch and hung out!! It was very nice. I hope we can get the money together so we can take her to the Grand Canyon and make even more memories. At this point, it may be just as much about making lifelong memories for the family to keep with us after she is gone as it is for her to experience it for herself before she goes.
We are doing absolutely wonderful!!! We are about a quarter of our way t ur goal, betwen the donations here, and other fundraising efforts. We are at a total of $535!!! Thanks again, everyone!!!
Everyday, we are getting a bit closer to our goal!!! I'm wondering if I can find anyone who will do a match donation? Brainstorming today to see how I can get this goal met. The sooner the better!!! I will welcome any and all suggestions...
Hello!!! Yesterday, we brought up our total to $250 towards oour goal! Makes it feel so much more reachable, and I am So positive that we will make it before time runs out!!! Please find it in your heart to share this page and the gofundme page anywhere where you think it may help!!! We can do this!!!
Today, I had a bake sale/handmade jewelry sale, and raised 175. Yay!!! It's a great start!!!
Lisa Romero, age 54, was diagnosed with an incurable form of Brain Cancer. She had a golf ball sized tumor that was removed almost immediately, and she started a very aggressive regimen of chemo and radiation. She basically hit the ground running, figuratively, because she could no longer walk. But ready to fight nonetheless.
She began having dementia, and became incoherent on several occasions, due to small seizures in her brain at the site where the tumor was removed. She knew from the get go that she was going to fight and she was thankful for every day that was given to her. She has been in and out of the hospital, and she continues to fight.
Last weekend, however, she became out of it once again, and got it in her head that she was dying. She called each of us for different reasons, but we all knew it was her way of saying goodbye. She called me asking for a power of attorney, just in case, she said. She had quit eating for 3 days, refused all her meds, and just plain gave up.
Sunday night, her husband Ken, was there saying what he though was going to be the last goodbye he would ever say to his wife of 37 years. He said to her, "Lisa, you can't go yet! We never had a chance to go to the Grand Canyon."
That night, Lisa dreamed she was dying, but then woke coherent, and ready to fight again. She said she wasn''t ready to give up just yet, and started eating again as well as taking all the meds again. She had her fight back! We were all overjoyed and I was so happy to be able to take her grandkids up to the hospital to see her again. We had thought they would never see her again!!! WHile talkint to her, she told me of the "dream" where Ken told her about the Grand Canyon, and I knew it wasn't a dream, because she also thought of the rest of the weekend as a dream.
She told me a story of how when her dad died a couple years ago, his only regret was not having seen the Grand Canyon. Wouldn't it be awesome for her to be able to tell him all about it when she gets to go be with him?
I knew at once that it would be my goal to figure out how to get her to the Grand Canyon. I am trying to raise, through donation, $3000 to get her there.
