I'm Geoff Horsfield, the former Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion striker. I'm running the Great Birmingham Run (half marathon) for two very personal causes, which each will receive half of any money I raise.
I'm tackling the 13.1-mile course - the furthest I'll have ever run - on Sunday, October 16 with my mate Dean Wheeler, who recently lost his wife, Kellie, a dear family friend, to skin cancer. We're raising money for Marie Cure Hospice, in Solihull, which cared for mum-of-three Kellie during her final days.
The other reason I'm taking on this challenge is to help the homeless and vulnerable. I've recently set up the Geoff Horsfield Foundation to provide supported accomodation for desperate people, many of whom have mental health issues, suffered terrible domestic abuse or have nowhere else to turn. We've set up two seven-bedroomed houses around the Birmingham area - but more needs to be done. Monies raised will provide services to help them rebuild their lives.
