A Life Shattered:
Nate's life was completely shattered when his fiancé and unborn baby unexpectedly died from a brain aneurism. It then became almost completely unbearable when his ten year-old daughter was taken from him as well.
I created this page in hope of finding Nate, and his daughter Kareena, the help they so desperately need.
Nate's Story:
My fiancé Meena and I were together for 9 years. We had a very happy family that included our ten year-old daughter Kareena (Meena’s child from a previous marriage whom I'd raised as my own since she was less than a year old,) our two year-old little boy, two dogs, and another baby on the way that was due in just 5 months.
On August 25th, two days before my birthday, I found Meena unresponsive upstairs. I called 911 and she was rushed to the hospital via ambulance. I gathered my kids and hurriedly followed to the hospital only to be told that her chances of survival were “grim” and that she may die.
The baby was still alive that day inside her.
I spent the night there in the hospital with them.
I was told the next day, after a couple tests had been done, that my Meena couldn’t live anymore without life support--and that the baby had died.
Having to tell our daughter that her mother wasn’t going to ever come home was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.
All the family arrived who could make it to come pay their respects to Meena before they removed life support. And then, on my birthday, we let her go in peace.
I later learned that she had suffered from an aneurism in her brain. It is thought that, because she was pregnant, any headaches that may have been warning signs were likely dismissed by her as simply being pregnancy related.
Meena’s funeral was planned for the upcoming Saturday and the burial for the following Monday.
That Saturday, after enduring the emotional funeral, my daughter and I went to Meena’s brother’s house for dinner and to spend time together as a family. While we were grieving together at Meena's brother's, I was shocked to be contacted by the local police, and told that I had one hour to bring my daughter to the police station. Kareena’s biological father there demanding that she now come live with him.
This was absolutely horrifying and confusing to us all! In the past 10 years there had been no calls, no visits, no letters, or anything else to let Kareena or anyone else know that he cared that she even existed. I raised my objections with the police, and tried to explain, but was informed I would be charged with a felony if I didn’t comply immediately. I lost it. But I had no option other than to comply.
Overwhelmed, shocked, confused, and grieving I showed up with Kareena, MY DAUGHTER, at the police station--where she cried her eyes out because she was now, in the midst of grieving the loss of her mother, being forced to leave her home to live with a strange man she didn’t know, and didn't even remember. A man who would not even allow her to stay to attend her own mother’s burial.
It has been over two months now. My son asks for his mother and sister daily. I have told him what happened to mom--but I don’t know how to explain the legal mess that’s taken his sister away from us. He’ll be 3 in December.
Many people encouraged me to fight for Kareena. And I have a lawyer now that’s pursuing visitation for me. I’ve paid my lawyer what she wants so far, but it is going to take more, and I really don’t have anything more to give.
Though I was able to take out a loan with the bank for what the cemetery wanted up front, I haven’t been able to pay the funeral home what I owe them, and they are now taking me to small claims court.
I’ve never done anything like GoFundMe before. I never knew it existed until recently.
Anything anybody can do to help would be a blessing.
