Edward L Tindall Jr - Swim/Shower Leg

Hello world! I am in need of your help. In March of 2012 My then 7 year old son & 6 year old daughter were involved in a very serious school bus accident. My daughter luckily was not severely injured. My son, however was critically injured. On their way to school on the morning of March 12, 2012 their bus collided into a cement divider under a train bridge on south Emerson Ave. Upon impact my son Edward was thrown from the bus, where he hit the cement divider face first, then bounced back and was trapped in the front wheel well of the bus. His left leg partially traumatically amputated at the scene by the accident & then completely by the rescue crew to free him. He was life lined into Riley Hospital for children http://iuhealth.org/riley/

Upon my arrival from my hour long drive back to Indy from Lebanon, IN, I was informed that my baby boy, had a crushed mandible (from facial impact with the cement pillar) his right tibia was broken in 4 places, his left leg was already amputated below the knee, his right thigh was out of socket, and he had blood pooling at the base of his neck near his brain stem indicating sever head trauma. He was in a medically induced coma due to his injuries & the pain that he was in. He stayed in that medically induced coma in Riley's ICU for 3 weeks, as I impatiently waited to see my baby boys beautiful brown eyes again. He went through several surgeries while in that coma, through much faith & many prayers he came out of his coma.

After he awoke 3 weeks later on March 30, 2012 (his little sisters birthday) after about a week he finally recognized me, & I was faced with telling my baby boy not only about the bad accident, the death of the driver, & the death of one of his school mates, I then had to tell him that he no longer had his left foot. It was likely one of the hardest things I ever had to do outside of sitting by watching my babies battered & bruised body lay still for so long & as a mother I could do nothing to comfort him.

Edward had to re-learn everything. To eat (since he had a G-Tube), to communicate (as they had given him a tracheotomy during his mandible surgery due to him being in a coma & his mouth being wired shut), & finally to walk again with the assistance of a prosthesis. he underwent hours of painful physical therapy, & during this time my baby wanted to give up. But I pushed him, & pushed him. I made him a promise that if he promised me he would work hard & NEVER give up, when he was ready & physically able I would take him to Walt Disney World. Well it has been almost a year & it is time to make good on my promise.

However, in order for him to fully enjoy Disney & Florida (playing in the water on the beach, water rides, anything involving water) he needs a special prosthesis as his daily one can not get wet. This same leg will also allow him to stand in the shower again (right now he uses a shower chair). This is where I need your help, this leg is not covered by medical insurance as it is not deemed "medically necessary" by their standards. To me it is a quality of life issue. My baby didn't ask or do anything to cause this sudden change in his life & I just want it to be as normal for him as it can be... Our new normal.

Anything will help, as I will not plan our trip to Florida until he has this leg. We thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. God bless you!!!
