My family is not dispensable, PLEASE HELP.
My small family includes my husband (who is physically disabled and in constant pain), myself (I suffer from relentless depression), and my 13.5 year old daughter (who is our light and our reason for living). We live in an old historic district of Long Beach, CA.
Wells Fargo plans to foreclose on our home of 14 years, the only home my daughter has known. This is the 5th or 6th time Wells Fargo has tried to steal our home in the past few years, I have lost track. Each time we managed to escape by selling assets or cashing in retirement funds or lucking into some freelance work. But we have nothing left to sell. We don't have family to help. And the freelance work seems to have dried up.
We never even asked Wells Fargo to be our bank. They bought our mortgage from another company shortly after we bought the house.
I am not a slacker. I have worked hard all my life. When I lost my job at the local university, I received a settlement and spent the first year "off" trying to heal myself. I also became active trying to do good for the community by starting Long Beach Grows. Believe me it is difficult to help the food insecure of my community under these circumstances, but it is something I believe in and it gave me (and still gives me) purpose.
In the meantime, I have applied to HUNDREDS of jobs in academia and also the nonprofit sector, but none will hire me, except for some temporary and very part time freelance writing jobs that are not enough.
I never thought it would be impossible to find another academic position in SoCal. I was in denial.
Last summer my daughter wanted to attend Music Camp so she raised the money to match a 50% scholarship by selling cookies throughout the neighborhood. (This summer she received a full scholarship!) Her success selling cookies gave us the idea to start a cottage food business selling organic baked goods. So instead of getting more and more depressed spending every waking hour applying for jobs that I never hear back from, I decided to get off the computer (for the most part) and start baking. At least I can feed people quality bread and treats. It gives me purpose. And my daughter and I get exercise meeting our neighbors selling throughout the neighborhood when we are not busy baking and at the farmers markets. It's a small family business.
However, so far, it's not enough to pay the mortgage. (Please come and buy from us at the farmers markets; I will bake 24/7 if it comes down to it.)
If Wells Fargo succeeds in taking our home from us, we will be homeless and on the streets, literally. If we lose our house, we have no other place to go. We have no way to put our stuff in storage. We will lose everything. We will lose our only current means of making a living- baking at home, and 24/7 computer/internet access to seek and fulfill freelance writing gigs.
PLEASE HELP, if not for my sake, for my daughter's sake. She has such a promising future. She was accepted into the California Academy of Math and Science high school in the fall. She wants to attend Cornell University when she graduates. She has recently written a science fiction/fantasy novel (a school science assignment that turned into a writing obsession) that we hope to get published. She makes beautiful jewelry. She bakes. She gardens. She acts. She sings. She plays the clarinet. She has spoken in front of Long Beach City Council. If we lose our house, she might lose all of these opportunities. I can't bear it, but nothing I do seems good enough to solve our financial problems.
