Did you hear about Mellie the Chihuahua who was inside during a Santa Ana housefire? A sweater she was wearing at the time of the blaze saved her, while everything else in the house was destroyed and damaged by the flames.
Not mentioned in the story was our friend Dolores Avelino. He is a tenant who had just moved into the house a week prior. Dolores , 58, of Santa Ana was working at his job of 13 years when a roommate called to tell him the house was on fire. Dolores hurried back to the home to find it being ripped apart by flames.
Despite fire fighters efforts, Dolores lost all his personal belongings. His modest belongings included his clothing, a bedroom set, refrigerator, television and food for a month. Basically Dolores was left with just the clothing on his back.
The Red Cross was nice enough to relocate Dolores to a hotel for one night, but since then, Dolores has been staying with friends in the area.
Even though the homeowner’s have lost a great deal in this house fire, they have insurance to cover most of their losses . It is unfortunate that they’ve ignored Dolores’s pleas for reimbursement of his rental deposit and first month’s rent. This is a pitiful amount for someone who has lost virtually everything. Dolores realizes it might cost him more to pursue the loss with the landlord than what it’s worth. Although Dolores continues to work, his losses will not be recovered for many years.
If you want to help Dolores out, he needs a little boost to get back on his feet. He wants to become self sufficient again and not dependent on friends and family for basic life essentials.
