Derek's Medical Fund

On January 19, 2015 around 5:30 in the morning Derek had gone missing. His family and friends believed he was at work. When he never returned from work to his apartment in Queens his roommates thought that maybe he had gone out with some friends. As the time got later and later his roommates grew more worried. A call to his workplace Tuesday morning informed us that Derek had not shown up for work Monday or that Tuesday and they have had no contact with him. Immediately the police were called and a search started.

January 20, 2015 around 4:30 pm a truck driver had spotted Derek a half mile from the Farmingdale train station close to the train tracks. He was unconscious but showed some movement when the driver called out. He was brought to the emergency room and his family was contacted by a detective who is investigating what happened.

The injuries Derek has are severe. On top of traumatic brain injuries he was unconscious in the cold for almost 36 hours. His body temperature when brought to the ER was 75 degrees. To allow him to survive his body took extreme measures to protect his heart which damaged some other organs such as his kidneys. Currently he is in ICU and the doctors are working on keeping him stable and making his vital organs fully functional. An initial CAT scan showed injuries and a lot of swelling in the brain, but Derek has not been strong enough to undergo testings and/or treatments.

We are asking that everyone who reads this, be it friends, family or strangers, that they take the time to say a prayer for Derek. Although only Derek can tell us what occurred between the time he left his apartment in Astoria to the time he was found unconscious in Farmingdale, we are focusing all of our energy now on helping him get better.

This page is set up to help the Chau family with all medical and other expenses that can occur in these situations. Any support is greatly appreciated.
