About This Page
The Teen Project provides youth exiting foster care without a safe home to return to with a safe home and a college education.
In 2008, our Founder, Lauri Burns, sought out to obtain a mortgage loan to purchase a house so that we can bring our emancipated foster back to safety and provide them with a college education.
The challenge: We were all volunteers, we had no office, no staff, no ongoing revenue, no history and no experience running a non profit.
We had one thing - A vision of a community that cares enough to pick up where the law falls short by providing our abandoned foster youth with an equal chance at life.
The outcome: After hearing Lauri's Story, the stories of the homeless kids, and her plea for help, a local financial institution presented her with a letter of acceptance for an approved loan! The contingency... It had to be paid in full within 4 years.
The Teen Project purchased a three bedroom home in Lake Forest, California for $415,000. The home was placed in the name of the non profit. No one holds any interest. The team put 30% down and paid 2 years of house payments up front.
Over the next year, the home was adopted by a caring community for a complete remodel and expansion. In March we opened the doors to a brand new six bedroom home. Today the home is valued at over $700,000.
As it stands, we owe $293,000 and have approximately 1.8 years to pay it. We are seeking donations to complete this loan.
Like a stone hitting still water, the ripple affect of changing one life will affect many generations for several lifetimes to come... Please help us to secure the home for our kids! Next step...24/7 drop in center!
Every dollar helps! Even $1 keeps us moving in the right direction!
We operate with over 60 volunteers and professionals from the community donating their time and services. We have one FULL TIME employee who is funded by a direct grant. Our goal is that donor's money go to direct services for our kids.
For larger donations, contact the office and we will post online (1.888.4.TEENHOME or helen@theteenproject.com)
