Christine's Stroke Recovery

Christine Shipley suffered a massive stroke on November 21, 2013. To save her life, an emergency surgery was performed to remove a lower part of her skull to relieve the internal pressure. A few hours later, another surgery was performed and damaged brain tissue was removed. After more than four weeks in the hospital and months of physical rehabilitation, she regained partial vision and a limited ability to walk and talk again. One year and three months later, she has regained her vision, her balance and speech. She has nearly fully recovered and now wishes to continue doing what she loves – to teach children the art of dance.
For over 28 years, Christine owned and operated a school for young, aspiring dancers. After her stroke and during her recovery, her husband, her mother, her daughter, and a former student joined together to keep the school open for the current students. Her daughter took a family medical leave from her job in Los Angeles to come home to care for her mother and teach dance classes at the school. A graduate student and dear family friend left her home and professional dance career in L.A. to teach dance classes when Christine was unable. Her husband closed his business to care for Christine and help operate the school.
The medical bills grew to an unmanageable amount – over $450,000. The hospital staff recommended applying for community assistance and the application is currently in the approval process. While recovering, student enrollment at the school decreased. Christine has always been and is now returning as the driving force of the school. To continue providing the level of instruction and guidance she is so respected for, the school must relocate to a more accomodating facility.
The goal is to be able to reduce the cost of leased space, maintain the payroll for those who helped so much during her disability, and regrow the student enrollment to be able to repay some of the expense of the medical care provided to her.
The cost to relocate and build-out a modest dance studio is $40,000. Her performing and competing dance team, West Cobb Dance Explosion, is a non-profit organization registered with the State of Georgia with Control # 0452389.
The above photo shows Christine and her dancers receiving a top choreography award for a dance she choreographed before her stroke. Just four months into her recovery, she needed assistance to get on stage to accept the award. Christine has built a strong reputation in the dance industry for helping young dancers achieve their dreams in their performances and by their profession. Please help her to continue to be a motivational and guiding force for so many young performers in the dance arts.
