Candies and Whims is a Philippine based project to translate anarchist, feminist, gender, queer, mental health and radical texts into the Filipino language with the aim of publicizing and distributing it freely to the public and local community. A language they can grasp, understand and feel connected with makes readings that cannot be found, nor offered by the standard commercial educational system, accessible, promoting self-education towards liberation, resistance, and freedom.
Candies and Whims aspires to offer free lectures, discussions and workshops about the texts it will translate and publicize. It's a complete alternative educational project, a meeting point for people who want to learn and teach. Community sharing is the key to learning and understanding, not forceful indoctrination. The project will focus most of its energy on the lower strata of society or those who are unable to attend school and standard commercial courses, but want to learn. It is a response to the myth that education and learning is only possible within the structured, institutionalized, educational system devised by the state. Opportunities for learning are everywhere. It is possible, no matter who you are, and should not be limited by how much money you have. The project takes the principled stance of offering equal treatment and opportunity in education and learning, catering to all those willing to make the effort.
Candies and Whims is currently working out of internet cafes and paying rent for computers and per-page printing, which is quite expensive. The money that will be raised will primarily be used for printing and distributing the texts that will be translated. High priorities include things like: a computer, a printer, paper, ink, binding supplies, distribution costs, and basic educational necessities.
In addition to funds for the ongoing translation and publication projects, Candies and Whims is currently looking for collaborators, for indeed many hands make light work. Any kind of donations, whether they are monetary or materials useful for learning(books, zines, audios, cd's, films, etc), will be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone who would like to send texts to be translated, help translate the texts themselves, or otherwise contribute in any way is always welcome.
