Of the 43,000 Deaf people in Palestine, only about 700 students receive a public education, and the highest grade is 9th. So they cannot obtain a high school diploma or college degree.
Gainesville, Florida, and Qalqilya, Palestine, have been sister cities since 1998.
The only Deaf school in Palestine is in Qalqilya. Sister City Program of Gainesville, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is helping raise $1.8 million to build a new school so that students can earn a high school diploma. If we raise another $350,000 our dream will become a reality.
