I would like to put together a free crowdfunded public monthly cultural event for the indigenous villages on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, bringing in a different cultural expression each month ( Music, dance, theatre, comedy, poetry, etc.).The local indigenous culture is evident in the fabric of everyday life, and all of us who have come here from somewhere else definitely appreciate the many manifestations of the Mayan cultural expression. Unfortunately, the local population has had very little exposure or education about the great cultural expressions from the rest of the world. The only manifestations of the western cultural drive that reach the locals are unfortunately the mass production culture presented to them on their cable TVs. We want to promote real culture on the street level for everyone.
What the $6000 represents is the first 6 months of funding, which will include the following:
1. A musical, dance , or theatre group from outside would charge around $500 for a performance
2. To rent a sound system would cost around $300
3. $100- $200 for expenses ( Rooms and food for artists, tuk-tuks, posters, etc.)
4. A local group would perform for around $100- $150
The shows would change from month to month, creating a snowball effect of interest, and my belief is that the funding for the project to continue past that point would come from that groundswell of energy. The benefits are obvious: we are talking about the birth of a whole public cultural movement on a shoestring budget.
We are the producers of Festival Atitlan, a yearly cultural event organized by the community here on lake Atitlan.
