Alma Park & Pool Shade Structure

Alma is a small community in the heart of the Flint Hills of Kansas. The downtown features historic native stone buildings as well as a central park and pool. The pool is a large draw for families during the summer and the park is active year round hosting community events such as the mulligan community soup feed. Currently, the pool lacks gathering space and shade and the park is in need of more usable gathering space near the bathrooms.

As architecture students in the Design + Make studio at the nearby Kansas State University, we have teamed up with Alma to help provide this city park with a design intervention that will solve all of these problems. We have spent the fall and early spring developing a multi-purpose structure positioned near the existing pool-house facility. Our donated time and labor as well as our extensive studies on how to maximize materials have gotten us close to the city budget but we are in need of an additional $2,000 to realize our shade structure design.

We are asking for your support in our efforts to provide a much needed shade structure to a beloved small town with a tight budget. Additionally, your money will go towards helping architecture students realize our goals of meeting and exceeding Alma's expectations for park and pool improvements as well as gaining an understanding of hands on fabrication and carrying a project through to the construction process.
