When I was in India this year, like most who visit the region, I was struck by the poverty I saw. Two individuals that I came across in Agra, the home of the famous Taj Mahal, who were begging at the train station have stuck with me most since my return.

One man was in a 'customised wheelchair' with extremely enlarged feet as a result of elephantiasis. The other was walking on all fours as arms and legs were severely disfigured due to polio.

After doing further research and consulting with an infectious disease specialist, I have learnt that these men's diseases have progressed to such an extent that there are no treatment options for them. I have instead decided to raise money to donate to three organisations which work to help those suffering from similar ailments.

Elephantiasis can be prevented through efficient deworming programs. An organisation called Evidence Action runs a program called Deworm the World which works in the Indian provence of Rajasthan of which Agra is part of. The Deworm the World Initiative works to reduce the prevalence and intensity of intestinal worms, working in partnership with governments to establish and institutionalise large-scale control programs treating all at-risk children. I hope to be able to donate $1000 to this Evidence Action.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) works to improve the health and safety of children living in poverty around the world. For $40 UNICEF is able to administer a life saving polio vaccine to 200 Children. Causing kids serious paralysis, the aftermath of Polio will last a lifetime. Polio is a highly contagious viral infection, and prevention via vaccination is the best solution. Globally the number of polio cases has decreased by over 99% – from 125 countries in 1990 to just four countries today. But the work is not complete. UNICEF is the leading provider of vaccines for children. I hope to be able to donate $1000 to UNICEF's Polio campaign.

Have a look at this video below. It shows the lengths it takes to get a polio vaccine to a child in a developing country.

Interplast is an Australian not-for-profit organisation which works to improve the quality of life for people with disability who are disabled as a result of congenital or acquired medical conditions such as cleft lip and palate or burn scar contractures. They send volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons and other health proffessionals to the Asia Pacific region to prove free surgical treatment for patients who would otherwise not be able to afford access to such services. I hope to be able to donate $1000 to Interplast so that they may continue their incredible work.

If you are able to please donate. Each donation will be divided between the three charities I have mentioned. If I cannot help the men I came across in India specifically, I hope to be able to help others by preventing these horrible diseases and by providing treatment to those suffering.
