My name is Timothy Shertzer. I'm currently finishing up my sophomore year at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, a publicly funded boarding school in Natchitoches, Louisiana and currently serve as the president of its Speech & Debate team.
I have maintained a passion for speech & debate for four years now, competing at dozens of tournaments in the Louisiana area each year. Evidence has shown that participation in speech and debate activities not only provides a fun and constructive way for students to make their voices heard in regards to important issues in the world today, but also opens new doors for scholarship oppurtunities, contributes to the building of lifelong communication skills, and leads to increased self-confidence.
This year, I am one of only two students from the Louisiana District eligible to compete at the National Speech and Debate Association's National Tournament in the event of International Extemporeanous speaking. The National Tounrnament is one of the most prestigious events in Speech & Debate, attracting qualified competitors from all over the world. In fact, the National Speech & Debate tournament is one of the largest academic competitions in the world, and provides superb oppurtunities for students to test their communication skills while gaining valuable experiences that can be used throughout life.
This year, the National Tournament is being held in Overland Park, Kansas from June 15th to June 20th. Unfortunately, costs for registration, travel, and lodging are beyond what my family has the resources to pay for. I have conducted fundraisers here at school and raised part of the funding necessary to attend the tournament, but I still don't have the resources I need to attend the tournament.
