We're setting out to change the world by changing the lives of one person at a time. We aren't wealthy, and we're not taking government hand outs. We're just simple people using the bedroom our son no longer needs to provide a place for homeless people to get back on their feet again, and we need your help to do it.
We know the risks, and we understand why people in our community can't or won't open their doors to the homeless. Homelessness isn't really caused by a lack of money. It's caused by brokenness - brokenness of the individual, brokenness of the family, and brokenness of the communities - and broken people do broken things. The truth is, though, that most of those who are homeless just need a hand up. They need to have a phone number and an address to submit a job application, and someone to remind them that poverty doesn't define them, it's just the place they are in right now.
I dreamed of starting up a homeless shelter years ago, because I'd been there and I knew what it was like, but I never could get the funds together to get that going. That's when I began taking people in when I noticed the need, helping them to get back on their feet. Yes, I've had someone steal from me. However, I would rather run the risk of losing possessions than know that I sat by and did nothing when I had the ability to do something to make a difference. I will tell you that out of the 7 people we've helped, only one of them ever stole from us.
You may not be able to take them in, but you can support us and make a positive difference in their lives that way. If you often don't help because you feel overwhelmed by the number of people who need help and the sheer limit to your resources, I want to encourage you to remember this: "It only takes changing the life of one person to change the whole world."
