Alexander was born at 32 weeks and spent 100 days in the NICU. During his stay in the NICU Alex was diagnosed with Congenital Heart Defects, Congenital Scoliosis, Hypertension, Hypothyroidism, acid reflux, bilateral hearing loss, anomalies of the ear canals and a Type 1 Laryngeal Cleft. As time has gone by he has also been diagnosed with anomalies of his spinal cord, failure to thrive, inflammation of the duodenum, a cyst on his brain, a neurogenic bladder, a weakened immune system, swallowing & feeding difficulties and developmental delays. Alex has undergone 10 surgeries, numerous hospitalizations and countless test and procedures. He currently sees 14 pediatric specialists and receives physical, occupational, speech and hearing therapy. He is given supplemental nutrition through a g-tube and has a permanent shunt placed in his spinal cord.
On November 12, 2015, Alex will undergo major spine surgery. He has several vertebrae that are misshapen and fused together causing him to have a 72 degree scoliosis curvature. During surgery he will have several vertebrae removed, bone grafts, screws & rods placed to fuse his spine. The surgery comes with risk of blood loss, loss of bladder & bowel control and nerve damage. His recovery will be long and can take 6-9 months.
Funds raised here will help Alex’s family to provide him with the equipment needed for proper positioning for sleeping, feeding and bathing, other medical expenses, expenses associated with having Alex hospitalized and other daily living expenses.
The next two months will be filled with Alex undergoing test and checking in with several of his specialist and pediatrician to make sure that he is prepared for the spine surgery. Alex is a fighter and has endured more in 4 years than most will in a lifetime. No matter how bad things get, he always has a smile on his face. He is truly a blessing and is always so courageous.
