Hello there,
I would like to introduce you to the AZ State Championship Odyssey of the Mind team for Division 1 (grades 3-5) solving the structural engineering problem. The team has now qualified to go to the World Finals where teams come from all over the world to demonstrate how much weight their 18 gram balsa wood and glue structure can hold. This has to be accomplished without using a single column of wood in the 8†high multiple modular design. The team placed 1st place in regionals and were able to come in 1st place in the State competion and the team is in need of your support.
Odyssey of the Mind World Finals is a creative, problem solving competition where the best teams from all over the world will match wits, imagination, and personalities. Odyssey emphasizes creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, risk-taking as well as creative re-use of materials. The Odyssey of the Mind program fosters skills which businesses and corporations like yours would love to see in their future employees. Check out the International website for more information: www.odysseyofthemind.com
The East Valley Cre8tive Kids team in Mesa, AZ, is competing in “ The Stackable Structure†problem, a technical problem which requires teams to design and build a light-weight balsa wood and glue structure where multiple modules are stacked more than eight inches high. The structure is designed to be capable of holding a hundred plus pounds of weight when added to the top of it. The team's solution also involves an original play in which costumes, backdrops and props fold or unfold to change appearance as it builds drama as weight is added to the structure. The team will also be judged on their “thinking outside the box†ability when they creatively and effectively solve an unknown spontaneous challenge at the tournament.
The cost of sending the team to the World Final competition runs approximately $2000 per student/parent duo. This year’s competetion is being held at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa from May 28- 31, 2014. This team is comprised of six students who are asking for your assistance so they may attend the WF tournament, In which they will be able to present their solution that caused them to win both the regional and state levels of the competition in AZ. Please consider sponsoring the team’s participation in this valuable program. They will be innovative structure builders of the future.
