ROTARY Water/Sanitation : Lukaya, Uganda

Imagine walking miles just to get enough water to fill a two gallon jug that weighs sixteen pounds. This is reality for the people of Lukaya, Uganda. Providing clean, accessible water sources and safe sanitation solutions prevents illness and sometimes death. Join the Slippery Rock Rotary Club, Lukaya Rotary Club and Rotary International in their mission to bring clean, water and sanitation to the Mustard Seed Academy (MSA) and the villagers of Lukaya, Uganda. Currently MSA is providing comprehensive education for 500 children. Access to water and proper sanitation would allow the Mustard Seed Academy to double its size and serve a larger portion of the local villagers in Lukaya.
In 2013, Slippery Rock Rotary (District 7280) began working with the Mustard Seed Academy (for more information, see http://www.realpartnersuganda.org/), the Lukaya Rotary Club, and the people of Lukaya in an effort to provide clean, accessible water and sanitation to approximately 700 local villagers and the 500 children currently enrolled at the Mustard Seed Academy. In October 2013, Slippery Rock Rotarian, Ken Bennett, traveled to Lukaya, Uganda where he witnessed first-hand the difficulties faced daily by the people of Lukaya - lack of clean, accessible water and the enormous strain placed on both the adults and children of the village to supply it for drinking, washing, and cooking. Children lugging two gallon water jugs weighing up to sixteen pounds was a common sight in the early mornings and evenings. This water is obtained from local streams and wells which may be unsafe or non-working and can often cause illness and disease.
Ken's trip led him to the Rotary club in Lukaya, where a partnership was formed and the search for larger sources of aid was started. In late 2013, the Slippery Rock Rotary began a fundraising project, working towards the culmination of a Rotary International Global grant which will allow them to complete work within the village of Lukaya. The grant requires that the Slippery Rock Rotary club raise approximately $90,000 and Rotary International will provide the remainder of the $137,000 required to complete this phase of this long-term project.
Now, Slippery Rock Rotary is close to completing its fundraising campaign to provide clean water and sanitation to the Mustard Seed Academy and villagers in Lukaya, Uganda. Reaching this fundraising goal will mean the installation of two new wells and water sanitation services for the expanding school. Members of the Luyaka Rotary club will manage the water station, complete with education programs for the 700 villagers that live near the school's property. A unique water carrying system, a hippo roller, will be purchased to ease the burden of carrying the water to their homes. Raising $5000 or more brings the Slippery Rock Rotary even closer to our goals and every penny counts in our mission to bring the people of Lukaya basic necessities that we take for granted.
