Please help me help S Africa youth

Donation protected
In 20 days I will depart with a team of volunteers from my church, Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., on my first mission trip. I have wanted to go on a mission trip for more than 20 years - since my days working with youth at Trinity United Methodist Church in Marble Cliff, Ohio. I was always too busy with work it seemed to accompany the youth on their mission trips. I really missed out but, now it's my turn to help!

On May 9 I will depart for South Africa to work at a youth center - Bokamoso Centre - as well as feed the homeless and, nearest to my heart, volunteer at a hospice for individuals with HIV/AIDS. I fondly remember my years as a volunteer for Hospice at Riverside and Grant in Columbus, and hope that I will be able to bring some joy and good will to everyone I meet on this mission!

Here's the pitch (not a hard sell, but heartfelt!)
I am inviting you to be a part of the journey! I am trying to raise $1,000 that will help fund monetary contributions to the charities we will be serving. I am covering all of my travel expenses - whatever you donate will go to the people we are serving, not me.

Those who know me well know that I hate asking for things - especially money! But I believe in this trip and the people we will be serving so much, that I come to you today seeking your support. The last time I asked for a contribution for a cause I believed in was the 2007 Marine Corps Marathon, when I raised nearly $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in memory of my dear mom who succombed to that horrible disease. That should give you an indication of how much I believe in this mission trip and those we will serve.

I had months to raise the money for the Leaukemia and Lymphoma Society, but only have days to raise $1,000 for this trip. Will you help me reach - and exceed - my personal goal?

Here's a little bit of information about Bokamoso Centre
The centre works with at-risk youth in the impoverished township of Winterveld, providing life-skill training, career mentoring and scholarships for college or vocational school. We have been blessed at Metropolitan Church to be in relationship with the Bokamoso Centre over many years. Each year, youth from Bokamoso have visited Metropolitan, sharing their stories and struggles through their amazing music and performance skills.

Here's how to help (and get a tax deduction!)
Contributions can be tax deductible by sending a check made out to Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. You can send checks to me and I will deliver to the church. Here's my address:
