Dear friends and family,
Our poor little dog, Anna, had to undergo an emergency hemilaminectomy on April 10th, 2014. This means one lamina bone on her vertebral column was completely removed.
My husband and I first noticed a change in her spunky disposition on March 31st. She would yelp in pain every time her back and sides were rubbed. Two days later, we took her to our neighborhood vet and her doctor thought she might have some joint pain in her back, so she prescribed Anna some anti-inflammatory and opioid analgesic medication.
At first our pup was responding well, but a little over a week later, on Tuesday, April 8th, her back feet started to drag when she walked. By Wednesday night, the poor thing had lost complete movement in her hind legs and was literally dragging herself by her front paws. We took her back to the vet the next morning and were advised to immediately take her to an emergency clinic in Manhattan.
The doctor there confirmed she had a herniated disc that was starting to cause paralysis in her hind legs. It was imperative that she have surgery as soon as possible because the longer we waited, total paralysis would have occurred and her chances of recovery after surgery would drop from 90% to 50%.
So far, Anna is recovering as well as can be expected, but it has been a very expensive procedure--$6,550. (This figure doesn't include the additional costs of doctor visits, transportation, and medication.)
My husband, Paul, and myself, Dorothy, are both very hardworking people who live in Brooklyn, NY. I bartend and act, while Paul juggles three jobs and plays music. To some people, going through with this surgery may seem impractical. To us, Anna's our best friend and it would have been inhumane to have let her suffer or put her down--especially since she has such a high chance for a full recovery.
The surgery, doctor appointments, and medications have wiped out all of our savings and we've had to take out a $4,000 loan that will need to be paid off in 6 months or the interest rate will skyrocket from 0% to 26.99%.
We are humbly asking that you dig into your hearts and into your wallets and give whatever you can to help us. Thank you.
