On the Road to Recovery

Donation protected

This is my husband, Billy Wynne, a flight paramedic. He was involved in a medical helicopter crash on February 22, 2013, that killed the pilot and nurse, and critically injuring Billy. Billy spent 6 months in the hospital and has been home almost 8 months. Billy sustained over 65% 3rd & 4th degree burns over his body, a skull fracture, crushed spine at L-4 & L-5, fractured clavicle, sternum, right upper & lower arm, multiple ribs, punctured/collapsed lungs, fractured right femur, tibia, fibula, and crushed right ankle. He underwent 11 surgerys, from skin grafts to repairing broken bones to amputating his left leg above the knee and amputating his left fingers.

The recovery has been very difficult and painful for him, as well as the rest of us. It took months of inpatient rehab to get his balance back, in the beginning Billy couldn't even sit without falling over. He still continues outpatient rehab to work on strength and balance training with his new prosthetic leg.

Billy was very grateful when he first woke up out of the ICU that it was his left leg that was the one amputated and not his right, so that eventually he could drive. It was a couple months later before he realized that his right foot wasn't functional. Below his right knee he had decreased sensation, and no function below his right ankle.

We have tried to work on driving, but that has proved to be very unsafe. Billy can't feel his foot, so he can't tell how much pressure he has on the brake or gas pedal, and can't find the brake pedal after coming from the gas pedal.

We have talked with his physical therapist about driving, and he suggested getting a vehicle with adaptive hand controls to operate the brake and gas.

What we are asking for help with, is getting a vehicle with adaptive hand controls so my husband can regain some of his lost independence, and be able to take himself to Dr. appointments, therapy, and Lowes (his favorite store!).

I know now I have skipped a LOT of the details of our journey, but please visit our Facebook page "Build Hope for Wynne Family".
