Giathieko Toilet Renovation

Tax deductible
Global Village Resources, a portland based 501(c)3 nonprofit, plans to renovate the public toilet system in a village called Giathieko located in central Kenya. The current state of the toilets is far from sanitary, safe or even private. They are currently a pit latrine model stall with a corrugated metal doors and roofs. Over the course of time since their construction they have become in a state of disrepair covered with rust and supported with rotted wood. These toilets are located at the primary school and are used by the children who attend the school. Our concern lies in the health and safety of these kids. Not only is it not sanitary for the kids, but the rust and rotten wood could physically injure the kids as well making them sick from illnesses such as tetanus and blastomycosis by inhaling spores from rotting wood. What we want to accomplish with this project is to create a sustainable and safe place for the villagers and children to use. Since the bathrooms are located near the school, we can implement a sustainability curriculum, so that the students can learn what their new facilities are doing for them and their environment.
