Cash, the Border Collie Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Cash, my border collie, was attacked by a family dog on Sunday evening, March 30th.  Emergency vets were able to stabalize him that night and sent him home with us, but his condition deteriorated over the next few days.  Monday night we took him back in for fluids and injectible meds because he couldn't get anything down orally.  Tuesday he tried and seemed to succeed in eating a little bit.  Wednesday morning he refused food but seemed about the same as Tuesday so I made an appointment with our regular vet for that afternoon as it was time to check the drains anyway.  By the time the vet examined him, he was laying on the floor of the exam room and wouldn't even lift his head.  She suspected a torn esophagus or other serious damage that would be beyond their capacity to repair.

Back to the specialists at the ER we went.  He spent that night getting fluids and meds and trying to get stabalized enough for surgery the next day.  Around noon on Thursday the surgeon called to say that she had to operate but she was concerned because his blood pressure and glucose levels were not as stable as she would have liked.  Despite her concerns, he did phenomonally well under anesthesia and she was able to determine the real problem preventing healing.

When Sadie attacked him, she crushed his throat and shook him.  Either the crushing or the shaking caused damage that created a large hole in the back of his mouth.  This was not visible until the doctor opened his throat to explore the damage.  She was able to flush the area out well and excise damaged tissue, then repair the hole and insert a drain.

Emily and I visited him yesterday (Friday 4-4) and he was very quiet and restful but he stood up and gave us a little wag before stretching out in his comfy kennel again.  He hadn't eaten at that point, but when I called later the tech said he is eating now.  We are hopeful that he may be able to come home today (Saturday 4-5)

I am a dog groomer and actively support rescue.  I am committed to seeing that Cash has the best opportunity at a great quality of life.  At this point his outlook is very hopeful.  Every dollar that is contributed toward his recovery will be paid forward in rescue grooms.  If we exceed our goals, I will pass the funds directly to local rescue groups.
