Support Dacia and Rashid!

On Saturday, March 15th, Dacia and Rashid were headed to dinner at The Cheesecake Factory in the Galleria and made a quick stop at the Walmart on Hanley Rd. Pulling into the lot a man began shouting into the car about the way Rashid parked his car. There was a quick argument with the couple in the parking lot, who saw Rashid holster a firearm into his wasteband. Rashid and Dacia both open-carry firearms (MO is an open-carry state). Rashid entered the Walmart and Dacia remained in the car. She was not armed.

Shortly after, the Maplewood Police Department arrived with four squad cars. Three white officers confronted Dacia while she was sitting in the passenger seat with her seat belt on; one tapped on the window and told her to step out of the car. When Dacia asked why she needed to step out of the car, the officer reached through the open window, unlocked and opened the door, and grabbed her. Although Dacia continued to yell that she was being hurt and ask why she needed to step out of the vehicle, another officer joined in, grabbing her underneath her jaw and trying to pull her from the car. She was wearing her seat belt. When she made that known, a third officer said he would taser her. While the second officer released her, the first officer unlocked her seatbelt, grabbed and ripped her jacket, and the third officer shot her with the stun gun. She was hit with the taser while still in the passenger seat.

Numb from the taser, the officers lifted her from the seat and handcuffed her. Rashid was escorted back from inside the store. She was taken to St. Mary's to be certified as fit to be taken into custody. She was never told what she was arrested for. She and Rashid were detained in maplewood county jail until 3 a.m. Sunday morning, and then taken to the St. Louis County jail for a 24 hour holding. Rashid posted bond ($1,000) sunday and was released. Dacia had to stay till more money was raised, she was released that Monday afternoon.

Between the two of them, they are now being charged with six felonies: Rashid with unlawful use of a weapon, criminal action, and child endangerment, and Dacia with failure to comply and 3 counts of assault of an officer.

Dacia is 25 years old and is a stay at home mom who homeschools her two children, Tristan, age 7, and Taryn, age 5. She is 5'5", 141 lbs. She has no prior arrests for any violence, and no criminal history. Rashid is 30 years old and he works for the state as an electrician. They are good, kind, hardworking people who do everything they can to make the world a better place.

It has cost them over $4,000 just to make bond and remove their car from impound, and their legal fees are already accumulating to nearly $3,500. On top of that, they have two small children to care for, and bills to pay. We are trying to raise $10,000 to support them, help cover their legal fees, and fight back against these unfair charges.
