Mission Trip

Hello, everyone! My name is Corinne Bowers, and I am going to Nicaragua with Young Harris United Methodist Church in Athens GA on June 13th and staying there until June 21st. This will be my second time going. Last year I went with the same group, and the experience was unmatchable. We stayed at a Christian Humanitarian women and childrens refuge in Leon, named El Ayudante. From there, every day we would wake up and go to work. Our job was to build a house for a man named Javier. Previously he had been living in a home about the size of a tool shed with his three year old son, Jovan, his wife, and his mother in law. We went to build this house because his family was growing, and if he didn't find help soon, he'd have to move to Costa Rica and send funds back home with the possibility of not coming back. We started building this home from the ground up and we finished it with a couple coats of paint. In fact, we completed this house in three days. The other activities included putting on childerens church during a small Nicaraguan church servicein the countryside, and playing with the kids near the building site.  This trip was incredibly rewarding, and I can not wait to begin another amazing journey into Central America. Although currently it is uncertain what we will be doing in June this year, our hope is to build a real church in the more rural part of the community. The people there are holding services in a overhanging tent made of garbage bags and sticks, and whatever else they could get their hands on.
