Support Ugandan Trans Women NOW!

Update August 2016:
Beyonce, Executive Director of Transgender Equality Uganda, contacted me August 6, 2016. She and others were arrested at the "Mr and Miss Pride" event. They need our support.

She says:
"We had gathered as the LGBTQ community members, leaders and other activists and we were in a pride week, so had people contesting for Mr and Miss Pride in one of the clubs in Kampala. The club was raided and the police stopped the event and closed us in the club for about 45 minutes. We were not allowed to make phone calls and later they brutally detained us leaders. The others were let go.
Our lives are in danger. We need support for our security and safety."

The money we raise now will go directly to Beyonce to support her, as she is the lead activist and in danger. It will also help her do community outreach to support the trans community and make sure they are safe during these terrible and scary times.

Original campaign from 2014:
In Uganda, the anti-homosexuality bill has passed and will most likely be signed into law in the next month. Additionally, bail is being refused for anyone arrested for homosexuality. As in the US (and everywhere), the people most visible, and vulnerable to violence, are trans* women, especially those who engage in sex-work.

I just got back from Uganda (I visited January 2014)  and my friends need help!

Right now they need:
-safe housing (they are needing to re-locate on a regular basis)
-money for food
-money for safe transportation
-money for security

I am collecting $6,000** and will send it directly to trans* women who need it as fast as I can. This $6,000 will help 3-4 trans women (at my discretion) get into safer housing. Any leftover money (I doubt there will be any but just so everyone is clear about where the money is going*) will be donated to Transgender Equality Uganda.

As you probably know, the situation in Uganda is getting worse by the day (links to info below) So, this might not be the last ask. Get ready to support our trans* sisters in Uganda.

**I rasied the amount 2/25 to reflect the growing need for security help.
