Hello Friends, Just want to remind everyone that we can always use donations. Our friends at the Sunset Event Center set us up for getting things started this year and we are grateful. Funds are slowly dwindling. We have been reaching out to community youths just like we promised. Please consider setting up a reoccurring payment to help keep us on track. If you can't do 5$ a month, a one time contribution is also appreciated. Remember it is tax deductible!
Well we made a lot of new friends at cool desert nights. I had a few folks ask about donating, I referred them to our site so we could track and get receipts out. This idea is blossoming and we can't even begin to tell you how eager we are to get to work.
First off, I am not great at this but it is a necessary evil. Cushions has no reliable operating budget. We now have over three hundred and fifty friends. If EACH OF OUR FRIENDS could set up a recurring monthly donation of ten dollars...... well all of the sudden we have a facility and can start actively making a difference.
It is our desire to friend everyone who comes through our doors.... everybody needs friends..... and we need our friends.
Secondly, thank you..... for believing in our cause, for helping me through critical times.... but MOST importantly, for caring for those who need us.
All right!!!! Our board had it's first meeting and we are calling it a success. I have been elected President, Dustin Stecker as Vice, Dave Woods Treasurer and Angela Shaw Secretary.... Our other directer Kari Louk was not able to make it..... I told everyone that whoever didn't show was getting elected to something but some how she got lucky. Dustin brings the world of music to our program with years of experience working with bands throughout the Northwest. Dave Woods held his own company in Olympia and has all the software we will need to track our books. Kari Louk has been a drug and alcohol youth councilor for over twenty years. And Angela has dedicated as much time as needed while seeking her nursing degree. Me, well I am lovable and have the drive and passion to get this going. After all this is to honor my son and help all those who are struggling out there.
To recap what you have helped us accomplish, we are licensed as a non profit with Washington State, we have our EIN and UBI numbers (tax related numbers to operate) we have applied for tax exemption 501C3 status with the IRS (that was expensive), we have our Bylaws, Articles of Incorporation and Conflict of Interest policies in place.
I am proud to announce that Cushions will also have a website coming very soon (appears to be necessary when applying for tax exempt status.... bet it wasn't twenty years ago :)) That said watch for www.tricitycushions.org to be coming online with in the next month.
One of our dear friends Christy has set up a recurring monthly contribution (SHUTOUT)... if others could see it in their heart to do the same it would truly benefit the kids here in the Tri-Cities. Our resources have quickly been depleted but if and WHEN we receive tax exempt status we will be hitting it hard. I have been trying to send out thank yous for all contributions, these show the amount you donated and should serve as a receipt for charitable donations when you file your taxes.
Thank you everyone for your continued support. Please keep our effort in your prayers.
Time for an update..... Our board will be holding its first meeting this weekend. On the agenda, voting in our officers, adopting bylaws, conflict of interest policy and articles of incorporation. All these policies need to be in place for applying for 501c3 status with the irs. Thanks to everyone for the donations thus far. It has helped cover some of the start up expenses. Once we receive tax exempt status we will really look to start some serious fund raising.
It is apparent that we need to develop a system for contacting those who can volunteer their time. I will be working on this, local licensing and 501c3 documentation this weekend. Please add us to your favorites or bookmarks and check back frequently for updates. I send my sincere gratitude to all who have offered what they can thus far.
Good news friends! The Secretary of the State has accepted our application and offered insight on what to do next. One step closer! This project promises to take time and consideration. That said, with the acceptance from Washington state and the assignment of a board of directors we are one step closer to helping the youth of the tri-cities find another way! Please continue not only to garner support from others, but reach out to your teens who may have some insight on how to convince their peers to take another direction.
All right tonight's update. Cushions now has an EIN with the IRS. Thanks to your donations we were able to pay the application fee for being a charitable company through the Washington state secretary. Once that is approved we will be getting a local business license and applying for 501c3 status. This will make it easier for corporate entities to aid in our cause. Thank you all for your support so far. Please continue to share.
There are to many kids out there that need us (our village) to show them the way.
All, we are off to a good start. Thank you all for your donations thus far. We have also been told that we have all the sound equipment we will need available. This idea is truly in an infancy stage but we are resolved to get it going. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the youth in our area need a safe fun place to hang out.
I have heard story after story this week of teens sleeping on couches in different homes. Have no one to talk to and no place to call home. As many of us know, this leads to boredom and the need to go do something..... Anything.
Please share through out the community. Talk to your employers about corporate grants or sponsorship. We have an appointment Friday for what might be a suitable facility.
As a reminder.... They used to say "it takes a village to raise a kid" we a calling for our village to come together to offer these young ones a safe, clean and sober environment to party and learn.
Cushions..... from Websters dictionary..... a soft object that is used to make something more comfortable or protect from damage
After the death of my son, a concept started building inside of me. I want to open a place for kids here in the Tri-cities to come have fun but also learn life skills. Some of the things we plan to offer is first off and formost a clean and sober club for the kids to come dance and sing. We would hope that a 12 step program would find us as a good place to call home. Additionally we want to offer art, gardening, cooking, a studio for bands to play as loud as they want (a few things mentioned by the kids). We would ask friends and volunteers from the comunity to come demonstrate their skills and abilities sharing these skills with the kids. Our concept is watch it and do it...... but really just do it.
We want to reach out to the youth and find out what they want and need to help them be successful and have fun.
I additionally resolve that if our club does not come to be all funds will be returned to their source. We are not looking to make any money off of this but just help the youth out there.
My son went from couch to couch..... lost and misguided. Hence the name Cushions, a soft place to call home. I think websters explains it all!
Evidently the site automaticly creates a monetary goal. I want to make it perfectly clear that money is NOT our goal but helping the kids is. Any donation would be appreciated even if all you can give is time.
