The Midwest Institute of Opera (MIO) is a summer program for emerging artists located in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. It is our mission to give the emerging professional musician, an opportunity to shine on the stage in this intensive no-nonsense summer opera program; offering young artists the chance to perform complete operatic roles in their original language under the guidance of our professional opera staff, their experience and their expertise. In 2011 we started the program and since then we have successfully mounted full productions of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance and Verdi's Aïda!! In 2014 we performed full productions of Puccini's Suor Angelica, Bizet's Carmen and Dan Shore's The Beautiful Bridegroom!! This program is not only invaluable for our participants who need the experience to get to the next level of their careers but also to the central Illinois community where MIO is currently the only fully functioning opera venue. We are so excited because in 2014 we successfully started the community outreach program called MIOperatunities!! This program offers a FREE matinee performance of one of our season's operas. This year it will be Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, designed for audiences that normally cannot attend such an event, focusing on children, individuals with special needs and senior citizens, making opera accessible to all in the central Illinois community!!
How you can help!! Please donate anything that you can give so that we are able to bring you the highest quality artistry to the community and offer operatunities to these talented artists.
The money donated to MIO from this site is going to the production costs of our 2018 productions Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffman and Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance.
