Phase 1 of the summer kitchen project began 6 years ago when I made the decision to invest part of my retirement funds for, well, a retirement project - a summer kitchen for baking (farmer's market and food pantries), teaching old ways and methods, community gatherings, and salon concerts. The foundation was poured and a beautiful wood-fired bake oven, with a Rumford fireplace for hearth cooking, was built by a local mason using reclaimed brick and limestone from a razed elementary school as well as river rock and rock from my property. It has been used for these wonderful gatherings, classes, and concerts without the benefit of a roof or walls.

Now, for Phase 2

This is where I need your help.

Phase 2 of the Summer Kitchen Project seeks to surround the oven with walls, doors, windows, a roof, and a walkway around two sides with a handicap ramp. All this is being done by two local builders (Todd Layman and assistant, Chris) who share in this vision as well. The space will provide year-round opportunities for baking (farmer's market and food pantry needs), milling organic grains,  teaching old ways and methods (baking, sewing, weaving), community gatherings, and salon concerts. There is tremendous encouragement from friends and community for this project. My dream is not to 'retire', but to pass my skills and passion forward, for the next generation to inspire and teach, while providing unique experiences along the way for everyone who comes through those summer kitchen doors.

A basket of loaves heading to Good Neighbor House

At one of our Farmers Market Gatherings (for the vendors), the Pandini Brothers serenaded us while the pizzas were being baked in the wood-fired bake oven. The rains came and we continued the fun under the canopies.

The rain didn't stop the fun!

Before the roof, canopies and/or umbrellas were used for shade. This photo was taken before the beginning of one of our farm tours and flat bread demonstrations.

The Phase 2 funds would cover a metal roof, framing, siding, windows, skylights that open, folding work tables along inside wall, hand-built sliding doors and fasteners, concrete for a walkway (on two sides) with a handicap ramp, and paint for exposed wood on the exterior. Work has already begun.

The possibilities are tremendous for this space - the baking, weaving and sewing classes, the community gatherings, salon concerts, working with area food pantries (Good Neighbor House and First Place) to help with bread needs as well as teaching classes such as "Bake 2 loaves - one to take home and one for the food pantry", "Old Ways with Dough Trays",  "An Afternoon of Weaving (tea towels) and Tea", and "Sourdough 101", to name just a few.  I intend to use it with love and gratitude, as I pour into it my heart and soul, bringing life and joy into each experience inside the Summer Kitchen at 6635 StudeBaker, "History in the Baking".
