College Fund
Dear Visitors:
My name is Judith R. Mojica. I am a 21 year old young lady who is on her way to pursuing a life long dream. My goal for several years has been to save money to finally be able to attend college. In 2011, I graduated from Baptist Hill High School located in Hollywood, SC at the top of my class. My dream has always been to continue on with higher education. Unfortunately, after I graduated from high school, I was unable to apply for college because my citizenship status was still being processed. I came to the United States when I was 9 years old. And thankfully, in October 2013, my visa was approved. One of the many benefits is that now I am finally able to apply and attend college.
I am pursuing my passion to become a registered nurse. Although it will be a long road ahead, I am very much willing to put my energy and what resources I have saved into achieving my college degree and attending a nursing school. I have been diligently working several jobs since graduating from high school and acquiring my visa. However, I currently do not have enough saved to pay for college. I am hoping that donations from caring people will help me get started with college. I have a strong desire to have a career as a nurse. But first, I must get my college degree.
The moment I started kindergarten, school has always been like a second home. At such a young age, I began to understand how important education was. Having been born into a poor family in a small town in Mexico, higher education was rarely reached. My older sister and an aunt have been the only ones in my entire family to have pursued a career thus far and I would like to be the next one to make that accomplishment.
A the age of 9, I was brought to the United States and I started 4th grade. I did not speak any English. Fortunately the school offered me a tutor. A few months went by, and my family and I had to travel to South Carolina where we worked in the fields picking tomatoes. That was how I spent my first summer here and my 10th birthday as well.
Once summer had ended, I began 5th grade at a small public school. I was the only Hispanic of three who did not speak English. The school provided me with an American tutor who did not speak Spanish, but for the next weeks she tried her best to teach me English through signs and images. Unfortunately for me, she became absent due to maternity leave. For the remainder of the year, I was on my own. It became one of the hardest years for me, having to do homework, projects and school work being limited by the language. That same year also became a revelation. No matter how hard it was, I did not give up. Through simply watching and listening to my fellow classmates interact, I was able to learn and speak fluent English by the end of that year.
I graduated middle school in 2007 top of my class, and remained on the honor roll and principals list all through out. In August of the same year, I began high school. All throughout my four years in high school, I received numerous diplomas, certificates, awards and recognition from my principal who gave me the Phoenix award for best student of the year as well as from my JROTC instructors; having been a JROTC student for all four years.On June 2011, I graduated top of my class.
For the past two years since I've graduated, I've worked in various jobs, which include: child care, housekeeping, and elderly care. I have gained numerous amounts of real life experiences while caring for those in need. Being able to provide my care for young children and senior citizens has been a pleasure and a learning experience as well. This has certainly served me well and kindled my passion for a nursing career. The people that I work for have been wonderful and very supportive. They have been very kind opening their homes and hearts to give me an opportunity to work.
When my visa was approved on October 24, 2013, I began my journey acquiring all the steps needed to apply for college, as well as making sure I had all the required documents to do so. In a few weeks I plan to meet with an advisor who will help guide me through the process of my college applications. My plan is to apply to Trident Technical College located in Charleston, SC. Furthermore, I plan to take all classes and courses needed to prepare me for nursing school in the future.
